Which torrent client to go for?
I have been using P2P for my downloads for about a year now. In this year, I have used many bit torrent clients. And after using Azureus, I must say that I am overwhelmed by it. For me, it is the best torrent client out there.
For the people who have no idea about what a Bit-torrent sharing is, please visit this link or read the wikipedia article here.
Let me start from the start. Back when I stared off, I was using Windows XP - Professional and I got Bit Comet. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine. Back in those days, we had just got broadband and I had no idea what torrents were. So, I was satisfied excited by it. It proved to be, just the right thing for me then.
Then I switched over to Linux. In Linux, I found that uTorrent was a good option. uTorrent comes as a single binary file. So, using it on Linux over wine was a piece of cake. I felt the difference right from the start. uTorrent gave me better speeds and it was easy on resources (or maybe it had something to do with Linux being much faster than Windows
).
Then I started using it on Windows also. I found it to be performing better in Windows than in Linux. (Of course, it is built for Windows, I was using it under wine). And after my upgrade from openSUSE 10.2 to 10.3, uTorrent started behaving weirdly. It gave speeds about 25% of what I used to get before and still gave the same speeds for Windows.
So, I began searching for a client built for Linux. I found 2 to be among the most popular ones. Azuereus and Deluge. I installed the both of them. Tried deluge first. It took 15 minutes for a D/L to start and gave speeds of 2KBps for about 10 minutes. I quit it, started Azureus.
It was a shock for me to see the appearance (I am going for an Azureus review with my next post). It was brilliant. I loved it. I started the same torrent I was using which deluge in here. I got speeds of around 15KBps (on 256kbps connection). So, I read help files and configured it. Got speeds of 25KBps constant, which is the same I used to get with (still get with) uTorrent under Windows.
Given the options, looks, speeds that you get for Azureus, if you have a god machine, the little overhead system resource use is negligible. Go for it if you have a fast PC. Else, uTorrent remains my first choice.
