Open Source Electronics Softwares…. For the Electronics Engineer in you….

Ever since I joined Electronics Engineering bachelor’s degree course, I have been looking for some softwares in Linux (*nix base) to perform some tasks. I had seen the likes of Proteus, Protel, Or-CAD, etc in action on Windows platform. The problem was, however with the cost of these applications.

So, I started doing some searching work, and I have found some great open source alternatives for the softwares mentioned above. The main criterion of my search was some software to emulate digital and analog circuits, some to create neat circuit diagrams and then create a netlist to be provided to a PCB designing software.

This is what I have found,

PCB Designing

Circuit Schematic Design

This is something that I was searching madly. Finally, the search was over when I found gEDA… yeah, gEDA is the solution to all your needs. It contains, a schematic editor a PCB designer, a schematic to netlist to PCB designer.

All the needs of a lesser mortals can be found in that package. For anything extraordinary, though, you must search yourself. Cause I am happy with gEDA.

I agree that the gEDA suite still lacks the polished look of the likes of Proteus and Protel and stuff, but it is efficient, and IT WORKS, which is what I want…

For digital circuit simulation, you can either use kSimus or kLogic. Both are up to the mark in terms of efficiency and design.
