Completely going the CLI way…
It seems like I am going the console way now. Fully and as much as possible. I have already written about the Bit-Torrent client rTorrent that I am using for managing torrent downloads in console.
Now, today, after monitoring the performance of rTorrent for about a week, I have decided that, rather I think I would be right in believing that console based applications, though they lack the appearance and maybe some features, are way better in almost more than half the cases.
For instance, I have been using pidgin for IRC chatting. Pidgin is good, and I liked it a lot. It does not consume much RAM and processor, but I still needed something better suited for my needs. Pidgin is built as all in one IM. IRC, Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, AOL… all is built in inside it. But all I wanted was an IRC client. There are many options available, but I decided to go with irssi. I found irssi to be quite difficult at start, but now I am getting used to it. I will soon be posting a detailed review and a few tips about it. I have only begun using it today. So, review will take time.
Now the second thing. Music playback. Amarok is good. I love amaok and there are many other players available too. But I wanted to see for myself the console based media players. So, I went in and installed mp3blaster. It has been only an hour I am using it. I like it so far. So, another review coming up soon.
It is universally accepted that console applications can never completely replace the X applications or the other way around. Console will always be there. For some people and for some specific tasks, console based applications can replace X applications. For me right now torrent client is console based now and it might be the IRC chat client and music player too.
Stay tuned for a full fledged review.

As I already said, I am not fully switching to CLI. I am just trying these things out. I like them so far and I am avoiding GUI as much as I can.
I also found out a way to play movies from console. I will post about it when I try it out and have enough time.
