VirtualBox - A solution that is worth the hype…
I have been using QEMU for running live CDs and installing virtual machines inside openSUSE. Problem with QEMU is that it is too slow for it’s own good. QEMU’s emulation algorithm can only provide 10% of actual CPU speed. With the kQEMU accelerator, we can get it as high as 50%. Still something was lacking in it. The execution of even simple commands takes ages. So, I was on a hunt for some alternative.
Yesterday, I asked about the virtualization softwares on think-digit channel on freenode. I got many replies that suggested ‘VirtualBox‘. I looked into some articles on the net and found that it had quite good reports everywhere. I was curious about XEN also. I have read many good reports about that also. My previous encounter with XEN though was not a good one. I couldn’t seem to find anything good about it. Something that will give me through instructions on building the Virtual Machine. As I could not find anything, I gave it up.
VirtualBox though, is very easy to use. I am really astonished at its speed. I installed SliTaz and Mandriva 2008 One on my openSUSE through VirtualBox. It is real fast, has many options. I am happy with it till now. I hope that it will remain to be so.
