openSUSE official forums launched…

Finally, the much awaited openSUSE forums have become online since 9th of June 2008. You can access the forums at forums.opensuse.org.

This forums is a combined alternative to all the local english forums that openSUSE had, a merger of the openSUSE Novell support forums, suseforums.net, and suselinuxsupport.de - the three largest English-language dedicated support forums for openSUSE. Sad part is that the combined threads from all these older forums have been archieved and cannot be edited.

For a first look, the forum looks good. It is integrated perfectly with the current theme of the openSUSE website. The openSUSE Project will be looking at adding other languages to the forums in the very near future.

The new infrastructure is hosted by Novell to provide the highest possible quality of service, as part of Novell’s support of the openSUSE Project.

The forums hosted at forums.opensuse.org are available immediately. Users with an openSUSE account for the wiki, bugzilla, and other services wil be able to use their existing username for the forums. Users of suseforums.net and suselinuxsupport.de will be able to create new accounts on forums.opensuse.org.

Now I just hope that this thing is looked at as a positive point to make sure that SUSE beats the likes of Ubuntu, gentoo and such in community support and documentation. The forum, as I said, looks good, but it needs to sustain that. And the site, for me, is crap. The thing that lacks is the search function. I don’t know why, but using google to search through opensuse.org is better suited for me.

I hope that this changes with the increasing popularity and the launch of the 11.0 version.

The forums use the robust MySQL Fulltext search function available in any forum page. I don’t know why you say it lacks a search function.

I think you misunderstood me. Or maybe I was not clear enough.

I was talking about the wiki not the forum. The forum, as I said, looks very good. The wiki however, lacks the polished and professional touch of openSUSE that can be seen everywhere else.

I think something like the forum search must be in the wiki. The wiki, at the moment, does not feel right (to me, I don’t know if other people have other opinions).
