Rock On… Good Enough?

Rock On Rock on… The movie that has been portrayed as the next Dil Chahta Hai. Introducing one of the best director of our age as a hero and (surprisingly) as lead singer to almost all the songs in the movie. That is something new and unexpected. I had a lot of hopes from this movie. I watched it today. I will review the movie now, and tell you my verdict at the end.

The movie simply rocks. Farhan Akhtar has performed really well, so has Prachi Desai (in whatever little role she was offered). The music simply rocks (as described by the title of the movie). The lyrics are not as good as they could have been. People argue that it is Rock music and does not have good lyrics. Maybe it is true, but I don’t believe in it. :-|

All the actors (as usual, I don’t know names of all of them) except Arjun Rampal have acted very well. Arjun Rampal is a mess. Complete mess. He is the lead guitarist (Joe) of the band Magik. Farhan Akhtar (Aditya :-D ) is the Singer cum Second lead guitarist. The guy on the left at the bottom in the picture (Rob) is the keyboard player. The one next to him, KD (Killer Drummer) is well… the drummer :-|

They perform on roads (road shows :D ) in Mumbai and have one dream -> Create Magic with music. They all have the dream of making their name in the field of rock music by making something that will rock the world. But (there is always a ‘but’) something happens and the band falls apart. Now, after 10 years, they are not happy. They are not together and they cannot create that magic… The story is completely realistic one and could happen to most of us (if not all).

Back to Arjun Rampal thing. He is okay. Being a lead guitarist, he always has a guitar in his hand. BUT, he does not move his hands on the frets with the change in notes and chords. Okay, I do not expect (no one does) to really follow the music, but you can at least shift your hand at right time. He does not do that and everyone can notice it. On the other hand, the drummer, KD, you feel as if he really is playing the drums. It is a big difference between the 2.

I cannot stop noticing myself from the goofs in any movie. I even found a few in this movie. Some very less noticeable ones.. but they were there. I am not going to say anything about them, as they might have some spoilers. :-(

As usual, there is some tragedy at the end of the movie (I am not saying what). Some funny moments, when they want to get money for the band… You have to live it to like it :-D . There is one thing though, the movie should be seen in a theater. The intensity of the music and the concert cannot be experienced on a 25″ TV (well… maybe a 41″ plasma…). There is one more funny little surprise at the end of the movie… It is hilarious. Really well movie.

Moving on to the last section, the verdict. Is it good? Yes it is? Should one watch it? YES DEFINITELY and in theater please. Is it the next Dil Chahta Hai? No it is not. It is a completely different movie… Rating? 8/10.

^^ :-D Well, now I have a full week of time in front of me with no college… I am thinking of watching the complete second season of Supernatural :-)

As for the theme, you are the search engine, I am just the applying script. So, go ahead and search one for me. (I think I have taken a little too liking of this theme).

Hmm..And here’s my few cents abt this good & very well-written review!!!
….
Hey apart from Arjun Rampal’s messy guitar-work, he’s been fantastic in emoting!! I mean, when it comes from an established “non-actor” hunk, it does call for an applause!!
But yes, KD the drummer(Purab Kohli, FYI) is fantastic and completely believable, both in dextrous skills and acting ones…
And I disagree with you about Prachi….She’s good in her dialogue throw and onscreen presence…but she is expression-less….as plastic as it could get!!!
Your observation about the goof-ups in the movie is right, though!!
Over-all it indeed is a cool movie to watch! :-)

Well first of all, a lot of rock songs have become famous due do their lyrics. In fact good lyrics seem essential for becoming hit. Think of Bob Dylan! But am yet to see the movie. will let u know when I do

Aditya September 1st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

@nikhil, Well, you and I think same then. Listen to the songs dude, you don’t need to watch movie for that.

Yeah, a really good movie. It is different, not because it has something new or unique, but it lacks the typical ‘hindi’ touch to it. And yes the music truly rocks.

First of all, review is good.
I also watched movie today.
It’s energy packed movie, one can say.
Acting of all actors and actresses was nice except Rampal. He was super flop.
The Times Of India has given 4 stars.
According to me,movie would have been much much better e.g. they have used same theme of quarrel(…….spoliers???).
I rate this movie as 3/5.
