Rock On… Good Enough?
Rock on… The movie that has been portrayed as the next Dil Chahta Hai. Introducing one of the best director of our age as a hero and (surprisingly) as lead singer to almost all the songs in the movie. That is something new and unexpected. I had a lot of hopes from this movie. I watched it today. I will review the movie now, and tell you my verdict at the end.
The movie simply rocks. Farhan Akhtar has performed really well, so has Prachi Desai (in whatever little role she was offered). The music simply rocks (as described by the title of the movie). The lyrics are not as good as they could have been. People argue that it is Rock music and does not have good lyrics. Maybe it is true, but I don’t believe in it.
All the actors (as usual, I don’t know names of all of them) except Arjun Rampal have acted very well. Arjun Rampal is a mess. Complete mess. He is the lead guitarist (Joe) of the band Magik. Farhan Akhtar (Aditya
) is the Singer cum Second lead guitarist. The guy on the left at the bottom in the picture (Rob) is the keyboard player. The one next to him, KD (Killer Drummer) is well… the drummer
They perform on roads (road shows
) in Mumbai and have one dream -> Create Magic with music. They all have the dream of making their name in the field of rock music by making something that will rock the world. But (there is always a ‘but’) something happens and the band falls apart. Now, after 10 years, they are not happy. They are not together and they cannot create that magic… The story is completely realistic one and could happen to most of us (if not all).
Back to Arjun Rampal thing. He is okay. Being a lead guitarist, he always has a guitar in his hand. BUT, he does not move his hands on the frets with the change in notes and chords. Okay, I do not expect (no one does) to really follow the music, but you can at least shift your hand at right time. He does not do that and everyone can notice it. On the other hand, the drummer, KD, you feel as if he really is playing the drums. It is a big difference between the 2.
I cannot stop noticing myself from the goofs in any movie. I even found a few in this movie. Some very less noticeable ones.. but they were there. I am not going to say anything about them, as they might have some spoilers.
As usual, there is some tragedy at the end of the movie (I am not saying what). Some funny moments, when they want to get money for the band… You have to live it to like it
. There is one thing though, the movie should be seen in a theater. The intensity of the music and the concert cannot be experienced on a 25″ TV (well… maybe a 41″ plasma…). There is one more funny little surprise at the end of the movie… It is hilarious. Really well movie.
Moving on to the last section, the verdict. Is it good? Yes it is? Should one watch it? YES DEFINITELY and in theater please. Is it the next Dil Chahta Hai? No it is not. It is a completely different movie… Rating? 8/10.
