Should YOU Be Satisfied?

I was stumbling through some sites today and I came across one site which had many photos of people in somewhat bad conditions (very bad conditions) and then there were captions. For example, one photo of a child writing on sand and the caption was, Do you hate school? Look at them and stuff like that.

Now, I know that this stuff is not meant for everyone to believe in, but it seems most people do, and I don’t. At the end of this set of images, there were few lines that said, Do not complain about things, but be satisfied with what you have, cause there are many people in this world who do not have even as much as you do.

Now, my theory on this is, it may be right to say so, that you should not complain. BUT, you should not be satisfied with what you have. If people were to get satisfied with what they had long ago, for example say, gas lamps, we never would have seen Incandascent lamps… same goes for computers. Why go for faster speeds and new architecture?

People might argue that this complaining/whinning is not the same as what we do (like I hate this country, no electricity and no good roads, etc). I think otherwise. Who knows, I might develop something from this whinning… or maybe you will…..

I’d say , YES.

At the end of the day , Satisfaction is what matters. Atleast to me.

Your line of thinking is correct , and yes , if everyone was satisfied with what they had , we wouldnt have gotteb better stuff.

But then again , it was unsatisfied people who built the atom bomb too.

I’d like not get into a debate over this , but one thing , without satisfaction there aint no happiness IMO.

P.S : I’m really impressed you took on this subject, a lot of people are forgetting the value of satisfaction. To most people satisfaction is just in terms of money and position , but it just aint even close.

I think, the things that people don’t have at this moment, people are desiring for the same.If someone is using bike and looks at the a person driving a car, then no doubt,he/she will desire for the car but at the same time one should not forget that he/she is having better than a bicycle rider.I think that satisfaction should be in this manner. But one should not be satisfied for his/her performance. We should raise our performance by using the facilities and infrastructure around us.What do you think?

Well, it could have helped your cause if you’d have included the URL where you read this stuff, too.
Plus, I’ve got mailers like that before…I don’t think that the focus of this article that you read was to promote satisfaction….
I think it was targeted at such people who don’t VALUE the simple and not so simple things that they have in life. A boy who hates going to school/college needs to reminded, that ultimately, is education is going to allow him to make ends meet, whether he likes it or not - unlike a street kid who doesn’t have a choice, or a future…. :((

So, I decide to reply after a LONG time. Sorry for the delay, but I wrote this from the Desktop and I don’t get to spend much time with it… Now that my laptop is back, I can reply.

@ray|raven, I know satisfaction is what matters. What I was saying was about things like, say 6-7 hours powercut cause India is too damn a shithole to produce electricity to match the needs of users. It is not acceptable. BUT, people say things like, ‘Look in the villages, they cut power for 12 hours and more. You should be thankful that it is only 6 hours’. I am sorry but that is not something I should be satisfied about.

@Amruta, about the school point. It is about hating, say bad teachers, the poor infrastructure, lack of facilities. Just because some poor kid has to use recycle paper (news paper and stuff) to learn, does not mean I should be satisfied with the poor paper quality of journal papers that tear when the point of your pencil is too sharp. It is not about hating school (learning).

@Mangesh, read the 2 things above. It is not a bike and car thing. And as long as you don’t get carried away, you should focus on the car so as to get one, but not mourn over it at the same time.

Boy, that seemed longer than the article…

An excellent article, I must agree with ray.

Here are my two cents:
Yes, we should be satisfied with what we currently have in life. For us to find happiness, its essential that we appreciate what we own/have achieved in our daily lives.

BUT being satisfied doesn’t mean that we should stop desiring for better things in life or even altogether stop working for them (while being content with what we have). Life then would be similarto still water of a pond which starts to stagnate.

After all change is the only constant, isn’t it. And changing something for better is always good.

.:Peace:.

Hey you are right Aditya, and you had made clear this point of yours in the blog post itself. However , as I said it is not about being satisfied with too little, it is about appreciating the simple things in life…
These things are insufficent, yes…
We should strive for better stuff, yes…
but we should at the same time remember that life would be much harder if they weren’t there at all….
It’s the same analogy as: Reach for the stars, but at same time keep your feet on the ground…
