And I Started Loving Oscars Again

Academy Awards
I was planning today for quite some time now. Was going to wake up early and sit with some coffee and peanuts to watch the 82nd Annual Academy Awards from 5-6am whatever the broadcast time was. Did I watch the show? Well, no. Turns out I was more tired than I imagined and slept through half the show and then I had college.
BUT, when I came back home, I was greeted by a pleasant surprise. Why? Well, first thing, Avatar did not receive the Best Motion Picture of the Year award. Secondly, Avatar did not receive Best Director Award (to James Cameron). Seems like the jury this year had at least some sense to them. After last year’s disaster of Slumdog winning 8 Oscars when it actually was worth 0, I had almost given up the hopes of seeing someone else take the Oscar. I am really happy Avatar did not get the award.
Don’t get me wrong here, the movie has brilliant animation and graphic sequences, but the story, overall execution, dialogs… It does not deserve to be the best picture of the year. I have not seen The Hurt Locker, but I am sure it is better than Avatar. I was actually gunning for District 9. Still, the exuberance at the justice to Avatar is enough. I have been saying it for a long time and it seems no one listens to me. Avatar, as a movie, sucks big time. Even Up is far far better than Avatar with its ‘mediocre’ (compared to Avatar) animation. Story of Up, though not an innovative story, is very good and it has been executed exceptionally well.
Popularity and Prestige are totally different things. Avatar proved it again today. You can read about the other Academy Award Winners here.
