Thank You For Smoking

Thank You For Smoking

Thank You For Smoking

WOW! That’s the only thing I kept saying about this movie right till the end. Don’t worry now, I am not going to advice people about smoking. Neither will the movie, mind you. Thank You For Smoking is a movie about a smart-ass spokesperson of Big Tobacco, Nick Naylor, starring Aaron Eckhart in a brilliant and strong performance. The plot outline in short is, Nick Naylor, has to struggle a lot to make sure that Big Tobacco is never in any sort of bad publicity and dispute. He has to do it by talking his way out of tight corners, making big promises and bunch of other things, which I am sure you will love to watch. Heck he even tries to rebel kids for smoking (no… not literally), makes a cancer kid his friend and announces a $50mn research campaign without consulting with his boss. Still they all love him.

The message the movie gives is more important here. Nick, a divorcée, takes his son out on trips (which he frequently has, being a lobbyist). His son, a curious  boy, keeps asking Nick about his work. Should he be telling all this stuff to his kid? That’s a moral issue. Point is, does Nick tell his son everything? Watch the movie to find that out. The delicacy shown while handling this issue is amusing.

There’s one more thing, Katie Holmes. A reporter, desperate for a story. Do I hear you guessing? Well, go ahead. You will hit the bulls eye, I am sure. It’s the same old stuff. Fuck a person to know his secrets, and guess what, she nails Nick (not literally :P ).

The background score is adequate, the Ministry of Death and its agents are splendid. A 3 person squad with Nick, a woman spokesperson for Alcohol and another guy gunning for guns (!). The fights with the senator, starring William H. Macy, are hilarious.

On a concluding note, I liked the movie a LOT. It’s been a long time since I saw a movie where the bad guy wins :) I like such movies. I was gunning for the Colonel while watching Avatar. Just for the thrills ;) My rating for Avatar? 3/5 (more on that later).  You will love Nick. A smart, intelligent and humorous guy, who is very successful, loves his son, loves his work and is passionate. Nick would also demand that you like and smoke cigarettes and yet you will like him.

Overall Rating? 3.5/5
