Thank You For Smoking

WOW! That’s the only thing I kept saying about this movie right till the end. Don’t worry now, I am not going to advice people about smoking. Neither will the movie, mind you. Thank You For Smoking is a movie about a smart-ass spokesperson of Big Tobacco, Nick Naylor, starring Aaron Eckhart in a brilliant and strong performance. The plot outline in short is, Nick Naylor, has to struggle a lot to make sure that Big Tobacco is never in any sort of bad publicity and dispute. He has to do it by talking his way out of tight corners, making big promises and bunch of other things, which I am sure you will love to watch. Heck he even tries to rebel kids for smoking (no… not literally), makes a cancer kid his friend and announces a $50mn research campaign without consulting with his boss. Still they all love him. Karthik Calling Karthik

I am and have always been a lover of weird movies. Movies which make you stress your mind and actually require you to think what is going on and what might be the end. Reading the title of this movie, it seemed that Karthik Calling Karthik might be one of the rare bollywood movies to land themselves in that weird yet good movies. I decided to check it out for myself.

The movie starts off with a bang. I was actually intrigued at the beginning and was eager to know what would come next. Karthik, a troubled young mag, working in a construction company does not exist. Figuratively I mean. No one knows him, no one bothers him, he is shy and total chicken. Then… Karthk starts receiving calls from Karthik. The concept itself is amusing. Is there a souble role? Is Karthik suffering from multiple personality disorder? Does he have an evil twin somewhere? Harishchandrachi Factory

When I first heard about this movie from newspapers, I was in a dilemma. Whether this would really be a comedy movie or just another documentary about the first movie ever made in India. In either cases, the movie caught my interest and I decided to give it a try. After all, the movie was in the running for Academy Awards 2010 (Oscars) from India in foreign language films.

Harishchandrachi Factory, in case you don’t know, is a movie about the making of the very first Indian movie by Dada Phalke. The movie was a mute movie and outlined the life of king Harishchandra. This movie, the making of that first movie, handles the issue from a funny perspective. [Read more →]
